Although much has changed, I think this is the northeast corner of Clark and Foster, which means you're standing on the southwest corner. When I was (much) younger I worked at a drugstore that would have been behind you. I haven't been back for years so I don't know what is there now. On the northwest corner there was a Swedish bakery and I dated one of the girls that worked there. The good old days . . .
You are correct. Directly behind where I was standing is now a health/vitamin shop. I am assuming that would have been the drugstore you worked at. The NW corner is now an Algerian place called Icosium Cafe. Their crepes are amazing.
It's great to hear from somebody who used to live here. I hope it is a good feeling to see these photos.
The white building to the left of the liquor store used to be a Swedish buffet restaurant and our 8th grade had our graduation party in the private room upstairs. First dance with a girl! Yes, lots of memories. Down by Foster and Glenwood there was a little Italian storefront restaurant where I learned to love Italian beef sandwiches, served with a brown paper bag of greasy french fries (YUM!) Do you recall a burger joint called Beefy's on the east side of Western Ave. a block or two north of Foster? There was a florist nearby too. It was our drive-in hamburger hangout back in the day. 19 cent hamburgers, and they were good! One of the early McDonalds opened up at the corner of Foster and Western and Beefy's started to lose business. After I moved away I heard Beefy's had burned down and never re-opened (I'm sure that's just a Chicago coincidence - urban renewal!)
The white building is still a restaurant. It's named Anne Sathers. Lots of greasy breakfast food with some big old cinnamon buns instead of toast. They use the upstairs as dining as well and they are usually really packed on Sunday.
It's all residential now by Glenwood and Foster. Except for a medical Center, I think they take care of the elderly. There still is a McDonalds on Western, but it's now on the Ainslie intersection. 19 cent hamburgers sound great.
